New web site design features
The Yooralla website has been redesigned to enhance accessibility and usability for people with disabilities, including people who use enabling technologies. The new design is based on the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Features include:
Keyboard shortcuts
Jump to content link
A 'jump to content' link is located in the top right corner of every page, except the home page. This link will skip all the header images and primary navigation, taking the user to the first level heading on the page.
Access keys
The following shortcut keys can be used by holding down the ALT key plus the relevant access key number or letter below, then clicking Enter to load the page for Windows users, and CONTROL plus access key for Mac users. Some browsers will automatically action the related link eg selecting ALT + 9 will return you to the first link in the main content.
- S - Skip navigation
- 1 - Home page
- 2 - Contact
- 3 - Site map
- 4 - Search
- 9 - Top of page
- 0 - Accessibility tips
Same page links
A list of page anchors is provided on most pages. These in-page links provide a summary of content on the page and allow the user to jump to the start of each section.
Return to top link
Periodically down the page you'll find links titled 'Top'. These links will take you back to the start of the page content, just below the primary navigation. They are especially useful for people who have difficulty scrolling.
Tabbing
Using the tab key provides a quick way to navigate active elements, such as links, on the page. The tabbing order for Yooralla's web site is:
- Search
- Page links
- Content links
- Footer
- Site wide navigation links
Page structure and layout
Yooralla's web site uses structural HTML to identify nested headings, lists, paragraphs, quotes etc and style sheets (CSS) for layout. This means you can use your own style sheet if you prefer.
Title tags have been used on primary navigation and other links where additional information is helpful. This includes access key details if relevant. Title information is available in most screen readers and displays as a tool tip on the screen, when the link is selected.
Acronyms and abbreviations are written in full for the first instance on each page, then marked up using the HTML accromyn attribute. The expanded text is displayed visually on screen as a tool tip in most browsers, when using a mouse pointer.
We have also used relative font sizes, that allow the user to make the text larger or smaller depending on individual reading preferences. This can be done using zoom magnification or by adjusting your browser preferences.
Page layout is consistent across the web site. Each internal page starts with a header, followed by the primary (site wide) navigation and search. Next is a list of links to key sections on the page. These links jump down the page to the start of the related content for that section. There will be a link back to the top close by. The footer information comes after the content and includes links to this page (accessibility tips), Yooralla's privacy statement and copyright information.
File formats
Where more than one file format is available, the most universal formats are given first (eg Plain Text followed by PDF).
At present many of the downloadable publications on our web site are only available in PDF format. This will be changing in the near future, with a choice of formats being provided. In the meantime, please contact us if you are experiencing difficulty accessing information.
