Aids and Equipment Program (AEP)

What is the Aids and Equipment Program?

The Aids and Equipment Program / Electronic Communication Devices Scheme subsidises the purchase of electronic communication devices for people with complex communication needs.

Eligibility

To be eligible for The Aids and Equipment Program / Electronic Communication Devices Scheme the person must:

  • be a resident of Victoria and hold a Medicare Card
  • have a permanent disability and complex communication needs
  • have been assessed by a speech pathologist as requiring a device
  • not be receiving funding through other Government funded schemes such as the Transport Accident Commission or other authorities

New Funding for 'unlocked' devices

The Aids and Equipment Program, Electronic Communication Devices Scheme has received funding from DHS to provide 'unlocked' electronic communication devices that allow the user to access additional applications such as Microsoft Calendar. This project will be open to Victorians with complex communication needs and will run from July 1, 2008 for 12 months.

The application process and eligibility requirements are the same as those used for the current A&EP ECD Scheme.

Referral and application

The application is a four-part process:

  1. An assessment of the applicant’s communication needs must first be undertaken by a Speech Pathologist. This assessment can be provided by a qualified local Speech Pathologist in the community or school or through Yooralla's ComTEC service.
  2. The Speech Pathologist’s report must provide a recommendation for a specific electronic communication device including any necessary accessories such as switches. View a Sample of a Speech Pathologist's Report.
  3. Download and Read the Aids and Equipment Information Package [PDF 146 KB].
    The Aids and Equipment Information Package and Application Form [PDF 80 KB] must be completed and signed by the doctor to confirm diagnosis.
  4. The completed Application Form and Speech Pathologist’s report should be sent to:

Fees

There are no fees charged to utilise this service.
