What is the Equipment Library?

The Equipment Library provides short term hire of specialised equipment for children, families, carers and adults. A broad range of equipment can be hired for a period of one month. Depending on availability, the initial hire period may be extended for another month. The Equipment Library is a service of the Independent Living Centre and, when required, library users can receive support from ILC therapists. The type of equipment available for hire or trial includes:

Eligibility

As a statewide service, the Equipment Library can be used by all members of the Victorian public.

Referral and application

A referral is not required to access the Equipment Library service. However, it is preferred that people call before visiting. In this way assistance from an ILC therapist can be pre-arranged if required. An interpreter can be arranged to be present at the appointment if required.

Fees

A little girl using some equipment from the Equipment Library A monthly fee of between $10 and $60 applies to all items borrowed. Cost is determined by the item's value. All items require a $100 deposit. This is fully refundable when the item is returned in good condition on the due date or before. Please contact the Equipment Library to enquire about the hiring costs of individual items. It is prefered that loans are paid on the day of collection, either by cash, credit card or cheque.

Where equipment is required to be couriered to / from a user, it is asked that the user arrange collection of the item(s) from the Equipment Library. This will be at the user's own cost. At the end of the loan period the Equipment Library can arrange for the item(s) to be returned and can cover the cost of this service. Please be aware that the use of couriers is intended to assist rural users of the service.

Subscriptions

Individual and organisational subscriptions are available and allow regular users to hire multiple items at a reduced cost. Items borrowed by subscribers are not available for longer periods than those borrowed by individuals. The yearly subscription period is from 1st January to 31st December. Loan Conditions

A loan agreement form must be completed when hiring an item from the Equipment Library. Details of the person using the equipment and/or a nominated contact (family member / carer / therapist) is requested. Appropriate identification such as a driver's licence is also required. This information remains private and confidential. Please note thate the loan of some items in the Equipment Library is dependent upon having a treating therapist involved. In addition, loan equipment is to be used within Victoria only.

Getting to the Equipment Library

A wheelchair accessible low floor bus (No. 414 to Laverton South) travels from the Paisley Street Terminus near the Footscray Railway Station. Please allow at least ten minutes to get from the train station to the bus stop on Paisley Street. The bus stop is located directly in front of the Yooralla Brooklyn building which houses the Equipment Library. Buses depart at approximately 40 minute intervals. A timetable is available from the Met Information Centre www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au or by telephoning 131 638.

Please Note: Not all buses are wheelchair accessible, please confirm scheduled times on the day of travelling with the bus company.
