Facility Based Respite
What is Facility Based Respite?
Facility Based Respite gives carers of people with disabilities the opportunity to take a break from their support role. This can be as a planned experience or in an emergency. Respite stays may range from one night through to an extended period. Yooralla's three respite facilities provide:
- a home like environment in modern purpose built premises
- fully wheelchair accessible units with staff trained in the use of specialist equipment and attendant care needs
- registered nursing assistance to train staff for specific support of people with high and/or complex personal care needs
- a place in which to meet and socialise with other people of similar age groups
- an enjoyable experience for the person with a disability
Individuals can use the service for up to 63 days a year.* Where carers need to use respite for longer periods in a year due to particular circumstances, this can be provided depending on availability.
Note: The Department of Human Services (D.H.S.) requires organisations to advise them when families exceed 63 days of respite use in a year. D.H.S. will then assist a family in planning for the complex needs of a person who exceeds this time limit.

Referral and application
Ring and make an appointment to meet the coordinator or manager. They will visit you to make an assessment of support needs. During this visit, you will be asked to sign a range of authorisations that are required before a person can access a service. If you wish to visit any of the services prior to an assessment being completed, this can be arranged. Please do not visit these facilities without first making an appointment. Once an individualised support plan has been developed with you, bookings can be made. We encourage planned bookings well in advance. Our respite services also have some capacity to respond to emergencies. Please contact the coordinator or manager if an emergency arises.
