Yooralla’s green thumbs
DATE: 30 June 2017
On Thursday afternoons, customers from Yooralla’s Learning Hub journey across town to weed, water and re-plant garden beds at Yooralla’s St Albans Community Hub.
The Gardening Program gives customers the opportunity to connect with nature and also integrate into the wider community.
According to the Service Manager of the Learning Hub, Rita Trotta, the program keeps the customers active and gives them a chance to explore and learn about the plants and foods they eat every day.
“Participants are given basic gardening skills so that at end of the program, they’ll know all about weeding, soil preparation for planting, season planting, harvesting, watering and water restrictions, as well as having the ability to recognise basic edibles and herbs,” says Rita.
“It also integrates numeracy, literacy, and art as participants take part in the different tasks around the garden”.
In the long term, Rita says the group is hoping to transform the gardens into a sustainable vegetable garden that will produce vegetables and herbs to use in the cooking program at the Learning Hub. The garden at the St Albans Community Hub will also be turned into a sensory garden, to stimulate all five senses and be extremely therapeutic for customers.
Rita says the customers thoroughly enjoy spending time outdoors and exploring all the possibilities of gardening: “participants really enjoy the magic happening – from planting a seed to harvesting – it never fails to amuse them”.
