Community Based Respite
Our Community Respite services give carers of people with disability the opportunity to take a break from their support role. We do this by offering a range of respite services, both in-home and community based, that provide an enjoyable experience for the person they care for.
We provide
In Home Respite
In Home Respite is designed to provide both home and community-based respite to the primary carer of a person with disability.
Our service aims to meet the requirements of the person with disability and the carer by being flexible and responsive to individual needs.
We provide carers with the opportunity to take time for themselves, either in or away from the home, while minimising disruptions to family members, especially the person with disability.
Recreation
Our Recreation team can get people with disability involved in a broad range of fun, adventurous or relaxing activities that can improve physical and mental wellbeing. We also work to increase community participation and build social networks.
Our team has workers with expertise in:
- Aquatics
- Community arts
- Community recreation
- Health and fitness
- Holidays and travel
- Outdoor recreation
Breakaway Flexible Respite
Breakaway Flexible Respite provides access to funds for planned respite both in and out of home.
The aim of this service is to give primary carers of people with disability broader options for obtaining support that is meaningful to them, while still providing a positive experience for the person with disability.
Breakaway's respite options may include:
- In-home support (short-term)
- Recreation
- Assistance to go on a family holiday (i.e. accommodation/travel costs)
- Camps
- Holiday programs
- Group holidays and activities
This program operates in the Eastern Metropolitan Region and the inner areas of the Southern Metropolitan Region.

Southern Metropolitan Region
Flexible Respite for under 18s
Our Flexible Respite Program supports young people with disability aged 12-18, who have complex social issues that prevent them from fully engaging in the community around them. We work with you to prepare a plan to achieve your goals and aspirations, as well as supporting you get involved in your local community.
This program is only available in Gippsland.
Family Based Respite in the East
Our Family Based Respite offers support for children and young people with disability by providing respite opportunities through family based placement.
We can provide families with flexible respite opportunities on a regular basis - either half days, full days, overnight or weekends.
This service is only available in the inner eastern region of Melbourne.
