Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability
DATE: 02 December 2019
Yooralla welcomes the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.
This is a vital inquiry pursuing transformational change that people with disability rightly expect.
We deeply regret the historical abuse of people with disability who were being supported by Yooralla. We understand that this abuse has caused pain and trauma for our customers and their families. We apologise once again for our failures to keep people safe from abuse.
Since 2012, Yooralla has undertaken a significant journey of change to its systems, policies and practices to improve the quality of our services, uphold human rights and safeguard people with disability.
We are pleased to have made an initial written submission to the Royal Commission and to participate in its public hearings this week.
We continue to encourage and support our customers to participate in the Royal Commission and seek to empower them so their voices can be heard.
We look forward to continuing to contribute to the Royal Commission’s inquiry and learn from its findings and recommendations in due course.
