Introducing Yooralla's CEO Terry Symonds
Posted on 03 May 2021 by
It’s an incredible pleasure and privilege to introduce my first newsletter as Yooralla’s new CEO.
I have spent many years working in health, but I commenced my professional career in disability services, in my home state of Queensland. It’s exciting to be back in the sector, having joined Yooralla in March.
I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Dr Sherene Devanesen, the former CEO, who recently retired after seven years of exemplary service. I am proud to continue Sherene’s great work, especially on improving the safety and quality of our services.
On 16 February 2021 we officially welcomed our new customers and colleagues from YMCA’s Macey Heights Adult Day Centre. Yooralla was appointed by YMCA Victoria Group to take over the operation of its disability service based in Avondale Heights, following an extensive national search and selection process – which is a testament to the quality of Yooralla’s services and the expertise of our workforce. You can read more about our new customers and colleagues reflecting on their transition to Yooralla in this newsletter.
Yooralla is proud of the cultural diversity of our customers and staff. To make information about our broad range of services accessible for those whose first language is not English, we have translated Yooralla’s ‘What We Do’ service flyer into what we know are some of the most common languages of our customers. The translated flyers are now available on Yooralla’s website.
Always looking for ways that we can enhance the quality of support provided to people with disability, we are also currently raising funds for a new project – a mobile Simulation Training Lab. It will provide hands-on training for more than 1,100 Disability Support Workers through simulation using an interactive mannequin. The project will be a partnership with Ambulance Victoria and Austin Health. You can learn more about and donate to this project via this link.
This is our first customer and family newsletter for some time and I hope you enjoy it. It’s great to be connecting with you again in this way and we will be sending this newsletter regularly from now on.
Meanwhile, I am getting around to all of our services to hear from customers in person and I look forward to meeting you.
