Living the life I want

In celebration of International Day of People with Disability on 3 December, Yooralla customer Jonathan shares his experience of moving into one of Yooralla’s supported accommodation units, and how he gained the independence he’d always dreamed of.
I’m Jono and I have a physical disability. Even though I have a disability, I don't let it stop me from living the life I want to live.
In April 2016, I moved into my very own brand new unit, supported Yooralla accommodation staff. It’s been the best decision I ever made, and now I am proud to say that I’m living the life I want.
Although I have a great family, I wanted to be independent and to live of my own. With support from Yooralla, I am living out my dream. I can control my life without feeling guilty of putting someone out, or worrying about the support I need.
These days, I want to go and do more things, and experience more that life has to offer. I still spend a lot of time with my family, but now that I don’t rely on them for support, our time together is more about enjoying their company. Recently, I made the decision to employ someone to go clubbing with – and I’m loving it!
One of the things I love about my unit is the home automation technology. Thanks to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S, I can do so many more things around the home for myself. I can do things like open my door which means I can go and come as I please, I can control my air conditioner, blinds and TV, and soon I’ll be able to control the lights too. Over the past five months, I have been working with Summer Foundation to make a video to show how technology has improved my life.
Since I moved, I also have started my own business. I regularly do presentations and talks on a wide range of topics, mostly about my life experience. Yooralla staff help me to make this a possibility. I have even created a website to promote and help manage the business. I wanted to have my own website for few years, and now finally I have one.
Honestly, I can’t find one bad thing about from moving from my family home into my own unit. Yooralla have made this a smooth transition for me. The house manager and carers are great people who I can approach if I have any problems. I thought I would get bored at first living on my own, but I’m so busy getting out and about that there’s no time to be bored.
Remember, only you can change you.
