In 2015, Uber Australia announced the launch of UberASSIST to provide people with disability with a reliable and accessible transport option. To ensure the service rolled out successfully, Uber approached the Australian Network on Disability (AND) to develop their driver training.

Driver training began in December 2016 and involved an extensive series of online learning modules and educational videos, which demonstrated how best to accommodate mobility aids and service animals, disability etiquette, communicating effectively, and using inclusive language.

David Rohrsheim, General Manager of Uber Australia, says that UberASSIST is an extension of Uber’s overall mission to provide simple and affordable transport to everyone. Since the training launched late in December 2016, the number of qualified UberASSIST drivers has more than doubled, offering greater independence for people with disability as the service continues to grow.
