Physiotherapy at Yooralla

A supportive team, professional development and the reward of supporting people with disability.

Anne-Marie, Senior Clinician at Yooralla, said that being a Physiotherapist is a diverse and rewarding career.

Working as a Physiotherapist at Yooralla offers therapists not only the chance to support people with disability, but a supportive work environment with plenty of professional development opportunities.

Physiotherapists support people under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in so many ways.

“Through Yooralla and the NDIS I have been able to pursue the aquatic [physiotherapy] area that I was interested in. Prior to the NDIS, I couldn’t get that going. There’s not a lot of aquatic physiotherapy in Melbourne’s west, particularly for children. It’s an area that I think has been missing and is very appropriate - particularly for children with disability.”

In her role of Senior Clinician, Anne-Marie mentors other Yooralla physiotherapists which involves catch ups, going on customer visits together and doing Communities of Practice.

She benefited from the same mentoring before she became a mentor herself and found that Yooralla “supports professional development with funding, time and Communities of Practice.”

“I think it’s nice that you do work a bit by yourself going on visits, but there are teams behind you. It is very supportive of professional development internally and externally. We have some very good resources like senior clinicians to fall back on if you need it.”

Yooralla’s therapists can also access specialised clinics to support their customers, such as ComTEC and the Wizzybug powered mobility program.

Anne-Marie has seen the NDIS improving customers and their carers day-to-day lives, with better Assistive Technology and home modifications, such as hoists. She’s also seen improvements in respite and for disability support workers.

Career wise, Anne-Marie said she’s happy that she’s moved into the Senior Clinician role, “it has been really good,” she said.
