Supporting people with disability to build job-ready skills
DATE: 14 May 2019
Yooralla’s Equal@Work is successfully preparing people with disability for work, with many participants gaining paid employment.
Equal@Work is a tailored learning and mentoring program that supports people with disability to develop employment skills and access paid employment. The program is a collaboration between Yooralla and the Box Hill Institute/Centre for Adult Education.
Since commencing in 2017, the program has supported dozens of people with disability to build employment skills and find jobs.
According to Andrew Nankivell, Yooralla’s Senior Group Manager of Yooralla’s Pathways to Employment, the most recent group of participants through the program achieved a great employment result.
“We recently worked with the Transport Accident Commission to provide training to their clients, many of whom had acquired brain injuries. At the conclusion of the Equal@Work program half of the participants were in paid employment,” said Andrew.
The program is comprised of four stages:
- A six-week pre-accredited course: Skills for Life and Work that is conducted at Box Hill Institute’s city and Shepparton campuses
- An eight-week program looking at job seeking skills and “soft” work skills with a volunteer mentor
- Work experience, and
- Job search.
