Why did you choose, and what do you like about working at Yooralla?

“I’ve continued to work for Yooralla for such a long time because I really believe in the values – respect and courage.” - Ruth, Yooralla Service Manager

Thinking about applying as a Disability Support Worker (DSW)? We asked some of Yooralla’s DSWs to discover what made them want to work at Yooralla.

Belief in Yooralla’s mission and values

Gbemisola, a DSW at one of Yooralla’s residential services chose to work for Yooralla because of the first thing she saw on Yooralla’s website, which was ‘Choose Equality’.

“I would recommend Yooralla to other workers coming as a disability support worker because Yooralla is a place that values human rights,” Gbemi says.

Ruth started her career in disability as a DSW, before progressing through to her current role as Service Manager of two of Yooralla’s residential sites.

“I’ve continued to work for Yooralla for such a long time because I really believe in the values – respect and courage.”

Personal connection

Some of Yooralla’s DSWs have a personal connection with Yooralla, such as Stephanie, who has seen firsthand how disability support can enrich a person with disability’s life.

“I chose to work for Yooralla because I have a desire to help and care for those living with disability, due to having a close family friend who uses Yooralla for its services. I can see the positive impact it’s having on him,” she says.

Diverse working environment

With customers and staff from a variety of backgrounds, Gbemi has found that Yooralla has a diverse culture, with people from different nationalities here and the work environment is great.

Job satisfaction

Over her career at Yooralla, Ruth has found that the main benefit for her working with Yooralla is that you get to support customers.

She says “I have had so many amazing experiences that you just don’t get in other jobs… the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve been a part of …that’s a big highlight, just that whole side of things for me.”

Career opportunities

No prior experience is necessary to begin your career in disability, with the most important factor being a willingness to learn.

“You can teach people a lot of things but you can’t teach people to care… and you can really build on that, being given the opportunity to be a part of a person’s everyday life, that’s amazing,” Ruth says.
