Diabetes and disability

DATE: 17 November 2015

Diabetes is a chronic health condition which impacts 387 million adults worldwide.

Key facts

In Australia, around 12% of people with disability also have diabetes. This is due to a number of factors, including:
  • diabetes can sometimes cause disability
  • certain types of disability can increase a person’s risk of diabetes, and also
  • because both diabetes and disability are more common in older people.

Technical notes

"Disability" is used to mean the broad ABS definition of disability. See the ABS website for details.
