Wizzybug 'On the Move' Program

Yooralla’s ‘On The Move’ program offers early assessment and trial of powered mobility with a device called a Wizzybug from as early as 12 months up to approximately 5 years of age

Yooralla’s ‘On The Move’ program is run by a Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist with the aim to:

  • Offer early assessment and trial of powered mobility
  • Encourage independence and participation for your child in their everyday activities through use and training in the Wizzybug
  • Facilitate exploration of powered mobility within your child's community​
  • Provide support and guidance to learn and progress the skill of using powered mobility
  • Provide support when exploring long term mobility options

We have a fleet of 25 Wizzybugs for hire which are available within Victoria. The Wizzybug can be disassembled into parts that fit in the boot of a car.  It has right or left-hand controllers or can be set up with alternative switches for easy access. There are postural supports within the seating system that also accommodate growth.  ​

Why is Early Powered Mobility important?

  • There is extensive research supporting the benefits of early powered mobility
  • Powered mobility is associated with the development and acquisition of important visual, cognitive, social, and perceptual skills
  • Powered mobility has a positive impact on body functions such as sleep/wake cycle, affect and motivation; activity outcomes such as self-initiated activity, independent mobility, and communication; as well as participation outcomes such as play skills, social interaction, and peer relationships
  • Powered wheelchairs should not be treated as a last resort but be viewed as a way to support early independent mobility

What is the Yooralla Wizzybug 'On the Move' Program?

Yooralla’s Wizzybug ‘On the Move Program’ offers assessment and support for early powered mobility and hire of Wizzybugs.
The program is run by an experienced Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist.
There are 25 Wizzybugs available for hire.
Referrals are received from the child’s early childhood (ECI) intervention therapist.
An assessment is completed with the child, family and ECI therapist.
Yooralla provide ongoing support to the family and ECI therapist throughout the duration of the hire.
The minimum age for a Wizzybug is approximately 14 months of age as stated in the manufacturer’s guidelines (This is just a guideline as does depend on the child’s size).

What is powered mobility?

Powered mobility includes power wheelchairs and other types of battery powered devices used by children to mobilise.

Is powered mobility safe for a child?

Yes.  As with a typically developing child, children using powered mobility need to be closely supervised to ensure safety.

What age can children start exploring early powered mobility?

There are various options for exploring powered mobility and this can start as early as 7 months. Current evidence has indicated that children as young as 14 months are able to use powered mobility to enhance their mobility, receptive communication and self-care skills

How long does it take to learn to drive powered mobility?

Any skill acquisition takes time and is variable depending on the individual and environmental circumstances. Research has found that children take approximately 12 weeks to become familiar with and use powered mobility

How can I hire a Wizzybug?

Contact wizzybug@yooralla.com.au to register your interest and see if the Wizzybug my be an option for you or your child / client. Our Wizzybug administration officer will be able to provide you with more information including:

  • Referral form to complete this is usually completed in conjunction with your child’s community therapist
  • 3, 6, and 12 month hire quote (hire can be renewed after initial hire period)
I already have funding for hire of a Wizzybug and for therapy support, what do I do next?

That’s great! Just complete the referral form and sign and return the appropriate quote to wizzybug@yooralla.com.au.  We can get you on your way to the next step!

I am waiting for an upcoming NDIS plan review or I do not have funding to support a Wizzybug trial just yet

That’s ok.  Just complete the referral form and send to wizzybug@yooralla.com.au. We can provide an estimate for you to take to your next planning meeting.  We will then wait to hear back from you once funding has been made available in your plan.

I have received approval for funding for a Wizzybug trial, what happens next?

That’s great!  Make sure you have sent through a completed referral form and signed and returned the appropriate quote to wizzybug@yooralla.com.au We will then:

  • Send out a service agreement to be signed electronically
  • Link you in with our Wizzybug therapists to arrange an assessment date
