End of NDIS supports transition period

Oct 8, 2025

From 3 October 2025, if you use your NDIS funding to buy something that isn’t an NDIS support - you may be required to pay it back.

As of 3 October 2025, the 12-month transition period for adjusting to the updated NDIS support lists has ended. This means you now need to be more careful about how you use your NDIS funding.

During the transition period, which started in October 2024, you had time to understand what you can and cannot purchase with your NDIS funds, after the NDIS’ decision to separate supports into two categories:

During the transition period, the NDIA didn’t raise debts for first or second purchases of items that weren’t NDIS supports, as long as the purchase was under $1,500.

From 3 October 2025, if you use your NDIS funding to buy something that isn’t an NDIS support, a debt may be raised, even if it costs less than $1,500.

Safeguards are in place

Managing your NDIS plan can feel complicated, but the NDIA has safeguards in place to help you:

  • Manual checks: If something doesn’t look right, the NDIA will check it manually and contact you or your nominee.
  • Individual consideration: Your personal circumstances will be considered before a debt is raised.
  • Review options: You can request a review, waiver, or write-off if needed.
  • Payment plans: If a debt is raised, you can set up a payment plan to manage repayments in a way that works for you.

These safeguards are designed to make sure you aren’t left without the supports you need.

What should you do?

To make sure you’re using your NDIS funding correctly, you should:

  1. Review the updated support lists: Familiarise yourself with what is and isn’t funded by the NDIS.
  2. Consult your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator: They can guide you on whether a support is funded.
  3. Keep receipts and records: Maintain documentation of all purchases made with your NDIS funding.
  4. Ask questions: If you’re unsure about a purchase, contact the NDIA or your support team for clarification.

By staying informed and proactive, you can continue to make the most of your NDIS plan and ensure your funding is used appropriately.
