From 'giving it a go' to Bunnings employment

May 27, 2026

Richard’s journey from Yooralla’s Business Enterprise to paid employment at Bunnings Warehouse highlights the power of inclusive workplaces, strong support networks and opportunities that focus on ability.

After finishing school, Richard began his employment journey at Yooralla’s Business Enterprise, working in a warehouse environment where he built strong foundational skills.

With a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, as well as the support from his family, Richard embraced new opportunities through the open employment project, exploring different pathways and gaining valuable experience – including getting paid at awards wage working with the social enterprise gardening team.

Keen to continue growing, Richard undertook an eight-week work experience placement at Bunnings Fulfillment Centre at Laverton North.

During this time, he demonstrated great commitment and capability – assisting with sorting and organising stock, putting items away, and learning how to use a Zebra scanner. His enthusiasm was clear, often singing “Bunnings Warehouse, lowest prices are just the beginning!” as he worked.

His efforts did not go unnoticed.

Impressed by his performances and attitude, the team at Bunnings offered him a casual employment opportunity, with his first shift commencing in April.

Since commencing his employment, Richard has already gone from strength to strength, and is now the fastest packing employee at the warehouse - a fact he isn't shy about sharing!

Opportunities like this are truly life changing.

They highlight the importance of having the right supports in place, alongside inclusive and forward-thinking employers who are willing to give individuals a chance.

When this happens, the focus shifts from disability to ability – unlocking potential and creating meaningful employment outcomes.
