Harmony Day at Lower Dandenong
Mar 25, 2026
Residents and staff at our Lower Dandenong site shared a very special celebration for Harmony Day, celebrating the diversity of our community.

Harmony Day is a very significant celebration at Yooralla's Lower Dandenong Specialist Disability Accommodation site.
As soon as March arrives, both staff and clients come together to plan, prepare, and organise the event. Everyone contributes in their own way, whether through planning, cooking, decorating, or coordinating activities, with the shared goal of enjoying each other’s company and creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere.
The purpose of this celebration goes beyond simply gathering for a social event. Harmony Day reinforces the message that everyone belongs, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. This sense of belonging helps staff and clients feel respected and valued, which in turn strengthens morale, teamwork, and engagement within the workplace.
A diverse community brings a wide range of perspectives and experiences. By celebrating these differences, we encourage people to appreciate one another’s strengths rather than viewing differences as barriers. This contributes to better communication, stronger collaboration, and more effective problem-solving across teams.
Harmony celebrations are particularly important in a diverse workplace because they promote respect, inclusion, and understanding among both staff and clients. By recognising and valuing different cultural backgrounds, we create an environment where individuals feel safe, heard, and supported. This not only strengthens relationships but also enables us to provide more culturally responsive and meaningful support to our clients.
Many clients and staff look forward to this event each year.
As Vanny, a resident shared, “We are all Australians, [we have] different features, but we think the same.”
Peter, who also resides at the property expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “I love this event because there is so much variety of food, especially my favourite samosas.”
Stephen, also a resident, enjoys seeing more staff come together, Luke appreciates the opportunity to dress up, and Leonard, a new client, shared that he truly enjoyed experiencing the celebration at the park for the first time.
Overall, Harmony Day continues to be a meaningful and unifying event that strengthens connections, celebrates diversity, and reinforces a culture of respect and belonging within the Lower Dandenong community.
