Luke’s Queensland dream comes true: Celebrating inclusion this IDPwD 2025

Dec 2, 2025

Luke’s journey is more than a great holiday story, it’s a powerful example of what inclusive support makes possible.

For International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) 2025, we’re highlighting stories that show what’s possible when people with disability are supported to pursue the goals that mean the most to them – like Luke!

Luke, a Yooralla residential client, had always dreamed of travelling to Queensland – exploring theme parks, trying new activities, and experiencing the excitement he’d only ever seen from afar.

For a long time, it felt out of reach. But with encouragement from the Yooralla Lower Dandenong team, and the support of two dedicated staff who travelled with him, Luke’s dream became a reality.

His week away was filled with adventure. Luke spent his days enjoying the thrills of Dreamworld, Wet’n’Wild and Movie World, taking in the spectacle of the Australian Outback Adventure, visiting a quirky steampunk pub, relaxing at the beach, and discovering new places and experiences every day. It was everything he had imagined, and more.

“It was truly the best time of my life,” Luke shared.

“A once-in-a-lifetime dream that I never thought would come true, but it did!”

“I still can’t believe that the amazing Yooralla Lower Dandenong team made this happen for me. I am so thankful and already looking forward to whatever adventures come next.

“I’ll no longer call it a dream, because I was wide awake when this beautiful trip happened.”

Luke’s journey is more than a great holiday story, it’s a powerful example of what inclusive support makes possible.

With the right support, he was able to set a goal, plan for it, and live it.

His Queensland adventure shows how important it is to empower people to make their own choices and take part in the activities, communities and experiences that light them up.

This year, and every year, we celebrate stories like Luke’s that remind us of the importance of supporting people to live the life they choose, and the incredible things that can happen when dreams are given room to grow.

Luke’s journey brings to life the message of IDPwD 2025, that when people with disability are supported to pursue their dreams, communities become more inclusive and equitable.

About International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability is observed annually on 3 December, a day established by the United Nations to promote awareness, understanding and the inclusion of people with disability in every part of society.

The 2025 theme is “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress” — a call to build communities that remove barriers and give people of all abilities equal opportunity to contribute and belong.
