NDIS changes announcement
Apr 23, 2026
The Government have recently announced changes to curb the growth of the NDIS, to safeguard it for the future.

You may have heard of significant changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that were announced yesterday.
We know this may feel uncertain, and we’re here to support you to understand what it means.
What is changing?
- Changes to eligibility and access to the NDIS
In the future, access to the NDIS will be based more on how your disability affects your daily life, not just your diagnosis.
It may be harder for some people to access the NDIS, such as children or those with lower support needs. Current participants are expected to remain on the scheme, with any changes to eligibility or funding likely to occur when plans are reviewed over time.
In future, some people with lower support needs may be supported through community-based services outside the NDIS.
These changes are expected to begin from around 2028 and will be introduced gradually.
- Community and social participation funding
Changes were announced to Social and Community Participation funding, with a likely reduction in funding for these supports and a stronger focus on daily living needs.
In addition, the Government has announced investment in an ‘Inclusive Communities’ fund, designed to support more services outside the NDIS.
This fund is expected to:
• invest in local community programs and supports
• help people with disability take part in everyday activities
• improve access to mainstream services (like sport, recreation, and community groups)
These supports are intended to be available to more people, including those who may not be eligible for the NDIS in the future.
- Plan reviews
NDIS plans may be reassessed less often, unless your situation or needs change. There will be more consistency in how plans are developed, with new tools developed to assess funding needs.
Those with higher-cost plans may have their plan reviewed more regularly.
- Providers and payments
More providers will be required to be NDIS registered, particularly those delivering personal care and daily living supports. Registered providers must meet strict quality and safety standards.
New ways of choosing and organising services will be introduced for some supports, such as plan management, support coordination, and home and living. The NDIS will create an approved list of providers, and participants may need to choose from these lists for certain services.
The way you pay these providers may also change, with a new digital payment system to be introduced to help track spending and reduce fraud.
Why are these changes happening?
The Government says these changes are needed to make sure the NDIS can continue into the future.
They also want to:
- make sure services are safe and high quality
- reduce fraud and misuse of funding
- make funding decisions fairer and more consistent, and
- build stronger, more inclusive communities with supports both inside and outside the NDIS
What do I have to do?
Right now, you don’t need to do anything.
- For the moment, your current plan will stay the same.
- If any of your providers need to change how they deliver services, they will let you know.
- You will have the opportunity to provide feedback and input into these changes.
