Peter’s unforgettable journey from Darwin to Adelaide

Dec 4, 2025

Peter's journey took him from Melbourne to Darwin, across the country on The Ghan, and finally to Adelaide before returning home by train.

For International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) 2025, we’re sharing stories that highlight how people with disability can achieve incredible things with the right support, and Peter’s journey is a perfect example.

Peter, a Yooralla residential client, turned his travelling dreams into reality in 2025 after a long time imagining what it would be like to travel - recently embarking on an unforgettable six-night adventure.

“I have been to Darwin, Adelaide and on my Ghan Train journey,” Peter said.

His journey took him from Melbourne to Darwin, across the country on The Ghan, and finally to Adelaide before returning home by train.

The trip began with a milestone moment, Peter’s first-ever flight. Stepping onto the plane in Melbourne and touching down in Darwin was something he had dreamed about for a long time.

“This is my first plane trip. My dream became reality,” Peter shared proudly.

Once in the Northern Territory, Peter wasted no time exploring everything Darwin had to offer.

He visited Crocosaurus Cove, where he got up close with some of Australia’s most iconic reptiles, and enjoyed a relaxed evening at the Darwin Waterfront, taking in dinner and drinks by the water.

A major highlight was the Litchfield National Park Tour & Croc Cruise, giving Peter the chance to see waterfalls, wildlife and breathtaking Top End landscapes.

From Darwin, he boarded The Ghan, one of the world’s most famous rail journeys, travelling southbound from Darwin to Adelaide. Along the way, Peter stopped at spectacular destinations including Nitmiluk Gorge, where he enjoyed a peaceful cruise surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs.

When he arrived in Adelaide, Peter continued his adventure by exploring everything the city has to offer, before completing his trip – travelling back to Melbourne on The Overland, taking in the passing scenery and enjoying a comfortable return home.

Looking back on his journey, Peter summed it up simply and powerfully: “My take, Dream BIG!”

About International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability is observed annually on 3 December, a day established by the United Nations to promote awareness, understanding and the inclusion of people with disability in every part of society.

The 2025 theme is ‘Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress’, a call to build communities that remove barriers and give people of all abilities equal opportunity to contribute and belong.
