Scottie's song of faith and connection

Scottie, a resident at Yooralla’s Box Hill Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) service, has a passion for songwriting.

Working closely with his team of support workers, Scottie has overcome significant muscle and speech barriers that make standard communication challenging, finding a unique way to bring his creative ideas to life.

Through a word-by-word communication process, Scottie directs the core concept and every line of each song, ensuring his voice and creative vision remain at the heart of the music.

Damian, a Yooralla Disability Support Worker, works alongside Scottie by composing the melodies, providing the musical instrumentation and vocals, and bringing Scottie's ideas to life exactly as he envisions them.

Scottie’s lyrics are simple, heartfelt and centred on themes of love, faith and connection. His presence is at the centre of every track, and he even features directly on one song, vocalising with incredible energy.

What began as a bit of fun soon found its voice in country music. Together, Scottie and Damian have recorded three original country songs and are preparing to release a three-to-five-track EP inspired by Scottie's faith in God.

The songwriting process has bypassed profound physical barriers to give Scottie a direct and authentic form of creative expression.

The resulting music is a genuine collaboration that gives Scottie identity-affirming representation while sharing his positive message of love, faith and connection with the wider community.

For Scottie, creating these songs is more than making music – it is a meaningful way to give something positive back to others while expressing who he is through the power of song.
