Support every child with disability to get the help they need

June 19, 2025

Many children from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds are excluded from accessing the NDIS, which provides essential supports that help them learn, develop and thrive.

World Refugee Week is a time to recognise the strength, resilience and contributions of people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds. It’s also a time to reflect on the barriers they continue to face – especially those living with disability.

Our focus

In Australia, children who arrive on permanent humanitarian visas can access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which provides essential supports that help them learn, develop and thrive.

However, many children from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds are excluded.

Children on bridging visas, Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas (SHEVs) may receive early childhood supports through state-funded programs. But when they start school, these supports often stop because they are not eligible for the NDIS due to their visa status.

This leaves families without a pathway to the ongoing support their children need at a critical stage of life. For these children, the shift to school, a time that should be exciting and full of potential, can become a time of uncertainty, regression, and lost opportunities.

At Yooralla, we see the impact of this gap every day. And we believe that no child should miss out on the chance to reach their full potential, regardless of where they were born or what visa they hold.

How you can support children with disability

During World Refugee Week, we’re asking you to help us bridge the disability support gap for those who do not qualify for the NDIS because of their visa status.

Your donation to our tax appeal will help us support children with disability by funding vital services to those who are not eligible for the NDIS but still need our support.
