Understanding NDIS physiotherapy fees: What you need to know

June 16, 2025

Navigating NDIS physiotherapy costs can be complex, especially when you're trying to optimise funding for yourself or an NDIS participant you support.

Navigating NDIS physiotherapy costs can be complex, especially when you're trying to optimise funding for yourself or an NDIS participant you support.

From NDIS pricing arrangements and price limits to travel costs and non-face-to-face billing, it’s crucial to understand how these elements affect what you actually pay. This guide breaks it all down so you can make informed decisions.

What is NDIS physiotherapy and how is it funded?

Physiotherapy under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) helps participants build mobility, independence, and daily function. It falls under the broader umbrella of Allied Health therapies and is funded through the Improved Daily Living category in a participant’s NDIS plan.

Fees for these therapy services are set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) in a document called the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (formerly the NDIS Price Guide). This outlines the maximum NDIS rate a registered provider can charge — often referred to as the physio NDIS rate.

What’s the standard physio NDIS rate?

As of 1 July 2025, the hourly NDIS rate for physiotherapy will be $183.99 for most areas. This fee applies across all NDIS registered providers — meaning you won’t pay more for a NDIS registered provider of your choice, unless you're in a remote area.

Physiotherapy delivered to people in remote areas and very remote areas attract higher NDIS rates to account for reduced access and longer travel time for therapists to deliver services.

Do NDIS physiotherapy prices vary?

Yes — but only within the limits set by the NDIS pricing arrangements. While the NDIA sets the maximum price limits, actual fees may be lower based on the provider what physiotherapy activities they charge for.

Common add-on costs you should know

Besides the cost of a face-to-face physiotherapy, there are other costs to deliver services that providers may charge, including:

  • Non-face-to-face time: such as writing reports, planning/preparing for sessions, making therapy resources or communicating with other professionals.
  • Provider travel time and mileage: When delivering services in the home, school, or work
  • Late cancellation fees: A provider may claim the full cost of your appointment if you cancel after the notice period. This period will vary between providers, however, is typically two working days.
  • Programs: Some providers offer structured therapy programs that bundle appointments, assessments, and reviews.

Budgeting for physiotherapy in your NDIS plan

Your physiotherapy sessions should be aligned with your NDIS plan goals, and it’s important to track how many hours of therapy you'll need across a year.

Tips for budgeting:

  • Allocate funding within your Capacity Building budget
  • Plan for both direct therapy time and non-face-to-face activities
  • Build in buffers for travel costs or additional therapy services
  • Review your service agreements regularly to ensure value for money

How to stay updated on NDIS pricing

Since NDIS pricing arrangements and arrangements and price limits can change annually, staying informed is key. Here’s how:

  • Subscribe to official NDIS updates
  • Download the latest pricing arrangements and price documents
  • Speak with your provider or Support Coordinator to stay ahead of rate changes

You can also refer to professional bodies like the Australian Physiotherapy Association to understand the broader context of therapy and the NDIS.

Does NDIS cover all therapy costs?

Only if the therapy services are:

  • Directly related to your disability
  • Aligned with your NDIS plan goals, and
  • Considered ‘reasonable and necessary’

For example, post-surgery rehab not related to your disability may not be covered.
