Changes to the provision of ComTEC Services at Yooralla - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is ComTEC?

ComTEC is a specialist Assistive Technology (AT) service which provides a consultancy service to primary therapists within the state of Victoria in addition to some services nationally.

Clients currently access ComTEC through a referral from their primary therapist, seeking specialist support and information relating to communication devices and other AT.

Why is Yooralla closing ComTEC?

Some AAC and other AT equipment can be trialed or hired through the suppliers using NDIS capacity building funds, with support form a speech pathologist and/or occupational therapist. Third party entities like ComTEC are not always needed to connect people with disability to AT.

Yooralla, as an organisation, has decided to close ComTEC as a standalone AT service. This is due to the significant operational costs associated with providing ComTEC Services, including access to often expensive AT equipment and operating within the current NDIS guidelines.

What happens to any current ComTEC bookings?

Existing ComTEC bookings will be honored. As of December 11, 2023, ComTEC will not be taking any new referrals under ComTEC.

Despite this change, Yooralla remains committed to supporting individuals with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and AT requirements. Individuals can continue to receive services by directly engaging with our specialist clinicians within the broader Allied Health team.

Can I still trial AAC through Yooralla?

Yes, you can still hire the same range of equipment through the Yooralla Equipment Library, which will now sit within the Allied Health Therapy team.

Will Yooralla still operate out of Sunshine?

Yes, the Yooralla Allied Health therapy service in the West will continue to operate out of the Sunshine office.

What will happen to the equipment library?

The equipment library will continue to provide equipment for hire. It will be catalogued and retained within the Allied Health West Therapy service.
