National Volunteer Week
As part of National Volunteer Week, we’d like to introduce you to Evan – a Yooralla customer who achieved his NDIS goal of being more involved in the community, through volunteering at Yooralla’s Opportunity Shop in Chelsea.
Evan said that Thursdays are the highlight of his week because that is when he volunteers at the Op Shop.
“I really love it and always look forward to Thursdays. We have a lot of regular customers and the team is really nice there so it is a lot of fun being part of that community,” he said.
Evan said that his volunteering work at Yooralla’s Op Shop is also paving the way to achieving his other NDIS goal – to develop his capacity to live on his own.
“I’ve been learning so much through my volunteering. I now work on the till, which is my favourite, and my focus now is to improve my customer service skills. I’m sure all these skills will help me get a job one day,” he said.
Evan has also been using his commute to the Op Shop as an opportunity to practice travelling on public transport independently.
“I like being able to go on a train by myself and you need to know how to do it if you live by yourself,” he said.
Some of Evan’s responsibilities at the Op Shop include sorting through the donations and disposing of unwanted goods, putting the clothes on hangers and tagging and pricing, keeping the shop neat and tidy and working on the till.
As part of National Volunteer Week, we’d like to say a big thank you to all of our invaluable volunteers.
