Training, teamwork and determination: Luca’s road to the Games

There’s plenty of excitement building for Yooralla Community Access client Luca, who is preparing to dive into one of the biggest opportunities of his sporting journey – representing Victoria at the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games this October.

Held in Melbourne from 19–23 October, the Games will bring together athletes from across Australia in a celebration of inclusion, determination and the power of sport. 

This year’s event is especially meaningful, marking 50 years of Special Olympics Australia creating opportunities for people with intellectual disability and autism to thrive through sport, connection and community.

For Luca, being selected to compete in swimming is a moment he’s incredibly proud of.

“Being selected to compete at the National Games is one of the proudest achievements of my sporting journey,” shared Luca.

Luca has been training hard in the lead up to the Games and is looking forward to competing in his favourite events, including the Individual Medley, Breaststroke and Butterfly. 

He also loves competing in the Medley Relay alongside his teammates.

“Through Special Olympics, I have gained confidence, independence, friendships and a strong sense of belonging within my community,” Luca said. 

“Sport has helped me grow not only as an athlete but also as a person, teaching me resilience, teamwork and determination.”

While the Games are an incredible opportunity, there are also costs involved, including travel, accommodation, uniforms and competition expenses. 

Luca is currently fundraising to help make his participation possible, and the Yooralla community is encouraged to get behind him.

“Every contribution, no matter the size, helps me continue pursuing my sporting dreams and representing my community on the national stage,” Luca said.
