Develop your life skills with Yooralla

Yooralla has a variety of ways people with disability to develop life skills as part of their NDIS plan.

Yooralla offers Life Skills programs for NDIS participants in a home setting in Box Hill, and at our Community Hubs across Victoria.

Our Life Skills program at our respite service in Box Hill means that participants can apply the life skills as they learn them, just as if they were in their own home.

Funded under the NDIS as a capacity building support, the Life Skills program aligns perfectly with people’s goals relating to building living skills, gaining confidence and independence. Depending on the participants’ goals and needs the program can include developing and following a budget and money skills, household care, laundry and clothes care, preparing a healthy weekly menu, shopping for groceries, cooking and healthy eating, hygiene and personal care. The program is held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am to 2pm.

Our life skills activities in Community Hubs are undertaken in a day program setting. Through the Community Hubs, NDIS participants have developed many valuable life skills, such as cooking, travelling on public transport, money handling and using technology such as iPads. Watch our Life Skills video to see what they have achieved.

These skills have increased the independence and confidence of many of Yooralla’s customers, such as Michael, who moved out of home with the support of Yooralla. Michael says it was the invaluable independent living skills he gained from attending Yooralla’s Whitehorse Community Hub that gave him the confidence to take the plunge and do it.

Life skills programs have also opened up other opportunities for our customers, such as Ian, who got a job at a local bakery, utilising the skills he learnt during Yooralla’s advanced cooking class. The advanced cooking class also teaches people with disability about nutrition, how to plan a meal and how to host a dinner party.

Greg was another customer who has put the life skills he learnt at Yooralla into practice, successfully navigating Melbourne’s public transport system to meet his friends for a camping trip.
